Super Neighborhood

Ongoing community engagement is an important element of the Mayor and City Council's agenda. Keeping the community involved and informed is central to the growth and success of the city. It is important that Newark's citizens actively participate in creating the change that they seek. As such, the Super Neighborhood Community Covenant (SNCC) Initiative seeks to build super neighborhoods and create covenants between these groups and the city that will identify priorities for the area and foster a commitment to the cooperative attainment of the community's goals.

A SNCC neighborhood is a geographically designated area where residents, civic organizations, institutions and businesses work together to identify and plan priorities to address the needs and concerns of their community. These community associations assess their collective needs and assets and work in conjunction with the Deputy Mayor of Community & Neighborhood Engagement to craft covenants that will formalize the partnership between the city and the SNCCC neighborhoods to create positive change and growth.

The Super Neighborhoods initiative began in 2006 with five pilot Super Neighborhoods. In January 2008, the Office of Neighborhood Engagement and Newark Now announced the addition of five additional Super Neighborhoods, bringing the total to ten.

10 Super Neighborhoods are as follows:

               Weequahic Park

               Springfield/Belmont

               Forest Hill

               North Ironbound

               Lincoln Park

               Clinton Hill

               Fairmount

               Lower Roseville

               University Heights

               West Side Park
