In 2007, Newark Now began the operation of Family Success Centers in 3 of Newark’s most challenged housing developments: Baxter Terrace, Bradley Court, and Seth Boyden. These Centers connect more than 1,000 families to vital government and non-governmental services and resources in ongoing ways. In addition, Newark Now helps coordinate the activities of all 11 Family Success Centers in Newark, facilitating the sharing of resources and best practices.
In 2007, Newark Now helped more than 1,100 low-income families obtain more than $1.5 million in tax refunds via free, professional tax preparation services. These services were provided at 4 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites operated by Newark Now.
Super Summer 2007 was a multi-faceted campaign coordinated by Newark Now that engaged youth and families across the city, with a particular focus on isolated, resource-poor neighborhoods. 88,355 Newarkers participated in 204 Super Summer events, including job fairs, block parties, music concerts, outdoor movie nights, sporting events, and community anti-violence rallies.
In 2007, Newark Now helped launch this initiative, which provided a framework for 5 City geographic areas – called “Super Neighborhoods” – to develop community priorities and work in partnership with City government to create positive change.
In 2007, Newark Now launched this initiative, which will help more than 80 fathers annually (beginning in 2008) develop a stronger commitment to fatherhood, stronger parenting skills, and more solid employment skills.
In 2007, Newark Now provided low-income Newark families with more than 4,000 turkeys during Thanksgiving, and provided more than 1,000 families with toys, clothing, and food during December.
In 2007, Newark Now helped more than 35 grassroots organizations build capacity and coalitions, and provided the organizations with training to help them grow – leadership development, strategic planning, program development, community organizing, fundraising, and media relations.
